Schools as Disabling Institutions: Workshop #2

Schooling & (Dis)connection - Wednesday, September 24th

• This workshop focuses on the ways schooling has and continues to (dis)connect students from their body, desires, curiosity, needs, and community & how that shapes relationships with themselves and with others.

Abolition & Disability Justice - Wednesday, October 8th

• This workshop focuses on the connections between abolition and disability justice, the disabling impact of schooling, and ways students and educators comply with and / or challenge disabling practices.

Designing Less Shitty Learning Spaces - Wednesday, October 22nd

• This workshop encourages attendees to design connection-centered learning spaces that meet, rather than ignore and work against their needs, and offers an abolitionist education framework as a way to mitigate and ultimately dismantle systems that replicate prisons, policing, and carceral logics that cause harm in the spaces we learn.

Each workshop will take place on Zoom and begin at 4pm PT / 5pm MT / 6pm CT / 7pm ET. Auto-generated captioning and visual descriptions of images will be available throughout the series. Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, no interpretation services will be available.

Registration

This workshop series is available at sliding scale rates!** We do not want money to be a barrier, so folks are welcome to attend at no cost. At the same time, we want to encourage people with access to wealth to pay at a scale that feels principled and doable.

AEC is a small collective of currently unpaid organizers with no organizational funds or budget. The registration costs from this series will be used to a) launch our solidarity support fund for students and educators, b) offer the unpaid staff small stipends to compensate for their labor, and c) cover costs related to access requests, as possible.

Sliding scale cost if you register for all three workshops: $0-300

Sliding scale cost if you register for individual workshops: $0-$100

Low end of sliding scale: $0-$35 for one workshop, $0-$100 for all three workshops

We suggest this range of payment for people who regularly struggle to meet basic needs (food, housing, transportation, healthcare) for various reasons, including unstable employment, lack of access to savings and/or generational wealth, materially supporting dependents/others, etc. These circumstances are most often present for people who are multiply marginalized due to parts of their identity, such as race, Indigeneity, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, legal status, etc.

Middle of sliding scale: $35-$70 for one workshop, $100-$200 for all three workshops

We suggest this range of payment for people who may struggle, but are usually able to meet basic needs (food, housing, transportation, healthcare). Attendees in this range have relatively stable employment, some access to savings and/or external financial support, have, or are working on an advanced education degree, have some disposable income, etc.

Full price or higher end of sliding scale: $70-$100 for one workshop, $200-$300 for all three workshops

We suggest this range of payment for people who are regularly able to meet basic needs (food, housing, transportation, healthcare) with income to spare. Attendees in this range are comfortably employed and/or don't need to work to meet their needs, have regular access to savings and/or external financial support, have, or are working on an advanced education degree, and are easily able to spend money on leisurely activities without significant financial burden. These circumstances are most often present for people who benefit from institutional privilege/social capital from structures such as whiteness, settler identity, cisheteropatriarchy, non-disabled status, access to secure legal status, etc.
